Project Profile:
The Norbord OSB plant in Guntown, MS had a humidity problem. The hot humid air generated by the wood making process was damaging the building’s insulation and corroding the steel. The current ventilation system was not effectively evacuating the hot air causing it to build up at the ceiling, wearing out the infrastructure.

The plant required a solution that would reduce heat, minimize the moisture, and stand up to the harsh conditions. Moffitt was contacted by Norbord to design a solution to their ventilation problem.

Moffitt determined that a Natural Ventilation system was the best way to encourage air movement. Placing Labyrinth natural ventilators on the roof would allow the dirty air to flow up and out of the building, and prevent the humid air from gathering at the ceiling. Not only does this fix the corrosion problem but it also lowers the internal temperature and controls humidity throughout the plant. As a result, the entire building is a cooler and more comfortable work space.

Application: Paper Packaging Mill

Equipment Summary:
Eight (8) 5’ × 40’ Monovent Natural Ventilators

Project Profile:
This northeast Georgia Paper Mill needed a new ventilation system to better suit the high heats that result from the paper making process. The current system was not properly venting the heat that results from the carton board production; heat was being trapped inside the building leading to temperatures of 141.1° F, and a high relative humidity of 20.3%.

Moffitt determined that adding natural ventilators would allow the hot air to more easily evacuate the building. The large size and construction of the building made it a prime candidate for the Moffitt Monovent. Retrofitting eight of these large ventilators onto the building roof, immediately lead to more comfortable temperatures inside. Dropping by over 20°, the temperature at the roof is now 120° F.

Moffitt Mechanical provided full turn-key service for this facility; designing the system, providing the equipment, and installing the ventilators. Moffitt expertly handled this project from start to finish.

Project Profile:
Greene County Power is an Electric Generating Plant that utilized the Moffitt Labyrinth and stationary blade wall louvers to ventilate it’s facility. Moffitt designed, supplied and installed the ventilation system for this Alabama turn-key project in the winter of 2010.

Moffitt had a small window to complete this project. The installation team put in louvers and safely mounted the roof top vents on this 3/12-pitched roof and ahead of a tight construction schedule; even in inclement weather conditions.

Project Profile:
Experiencing high-temperatures and stagnant air Moffitt Corporation was called to help Evonik Stockhausen find a solution to their ventilation problem. Located in Garyville, LA, this chemical factory produces a range of products.

The problem was due to lack of airflow within the building. Exhaust fans placed on the wall and roof were not effectively venting the air, leaving warm air trapped at the roof and cool air only moving next to the building walls.

A double Labyrinth roof vent was installed at ridge of the roof and additional Labyrinth units were placed in other key locations on the rooftop. These Natural Ventilators allowed the heat to escape the building; preventing air from getting trapped and increasing air-flow throughout the facility.

Moffitt provided a complete turn-key solution for this facility designing the system, fabricating the Labyrinth units, and assembling them in place. The system was quickly installed. It was finished in time to weather the 20 inches of rain and 80 mph winds of Hurricane Isaac. Over the the three days in August 2012, the Labyrinth units experienced no rain infiltration or damage despite torrential rain and high winds.

Project Profile:
Moffitt designed, supplied and installed a unique, automated ventilation system for this large Integrated Gasification Combined Cycle (IGCC) power plant in Edwardsport, Indiana. IGCC is a cutting-edge technology that turns coal into a synthesis gas (syngas) to improve the efficiency of the energy creation process. This process results in very high temperatures and requires a sophisticated ventilation system to keep it the optimal temperature.

Moffitt Mechanical supplied & installed a motor control center to operate the ventilation system in the steam turbine generator building. This system consisted of interlocking several different mechanisms, all supplied by Moffitt, such as wall louvers, roof fans and electric unit heaters. To ensure worker safety and a safe operating temperature for the power turbines all of these components must work as one.

The mechanisms are activated one of three ways: from a control box, automatic activation when the facility reaches a certain temperature or when the sensor in the gasification tower hits its limit. This helps keep the interior area properly ventilated in the safest and most efficient manner.

Moffitt Mechanical was able to install a complete ventilation system meeting all of the unique requirements of this facility.

Project Profile:
Golden Spread Electric Cooperative built a 170 MW Gas-Fired Power Plant to produce energy for over 200,000 customers. The facility utilizes 18 gas turbines to produce desired output.

Moffitt Mechanical installed a ventilation system provided by Moffitt Corporation consisting of a natural roof mounted ventilator and wall supply fans to pressurize the facility and provide intake air for the turbines. The design utilized at this facility is a near duplicate to a ventilation system provided by Moffitt for South Texas Electric Cooperative.

In addition to the general plant ventilation Moffitt Mechanical designed, supplied and installed HVAC products for interior conditioned spaces consisting of MCC Rooms, Switchgear Rooms, Battery Rooms and compressor rooms.
